Juan Cole on Saddam: The death of a dictator at Salon:

The body of Saddam, as it swung from the gallows at 6 a.m. Saturday Baghdad time, cast an ominous shadow over Iraq. The execution provoked intense questions about whether his trial was fair and about what the fallout will be. One thing is certain: The trial and execution of Saddam were about revenge, not justice. Instead of promoting national reconciliation, this act of revenge helped Saddam portray himself one last time as a symbol of Sunni Arab resistance, and became one more incitement to sectarian warfare.

One does not have to be opposed to the death penalty to have mixed feelings over his death. I am not a strong believer in the death penalty but I do believe that we have to be careful in condemning a death penalty in a country that has suffered so much because of this brutal dictator. At the same however it is clear from Cole’s story that the trial against Saddam was a political trial and that is one reason to feel bad about it, the other is the negative consequences his death might have.

When one looks at the Arabic blogosphere it is hard to find many people who are happy over what happened. Marc Lynch on Abu Aardvark has analysed the Arabic media who are in general worried about the consequences and Marc Lynch finds the execution on Eid plain stupid.

Several bloggers from Iraq also report on the execution. Such as Neurotic Iraqi Wife, horrified about the images, Today in Iraq with a round up of the latest news, Thoughts from Bagdad, also stunned about the fact that the execution was on the first day of Eid, Iraq Pundit has a surprising take before the execution and a true treasure is Iraqblogcount with a lot of contributors and blogs in English and Arabic. Also IraqSlogger gives a good overview of the latest news.

DUBAI, Dec 29 (Reuters) – An influential cleric of Saudi Arabia’s hardline Sunni school of Islam has denounced Shi’ite Muslims as “infidels” in a new religious edict that comes amid rising sectarian tension in the region.

“The rejectionists (Shi’ites) in their entirety are the worst of the Islamic nation’s sects. They bear all the characteristics of infidels,” Sheikh Abdel-Rahman al-Barrak said in the fatwa, or ruling, distributed on Islamist Web sites.

“They are in truth polytheist infidels, though they hide this,” it said, citing theological differences 14 centuries after the death of the Prophet Mohammad, such as reverence of shrines which followers of Saudi Arabia’s Wahhabi school consider abhorrent.

Concern is growing in Saudi Arabia, birthplace of Islam, over Shi’ite-Sunni violence in Iraq which has taken the northern neighbour to the brink of civil war. Sunni-Shi’ite tensions are also high in Lebanon, where Shi’ites are leading efforts to bring down a Sunni-led cabinet.

“The Sunni and Shi’ites schools of Islam are opposites that can never agree, there can be no coming together unless Sunnis give up their principles,” the fatwa said.

Barrak, an independent scholar, has come to be regarded by many as the highest authority for Wahhabi Muslims.

Clerics of the austere Wahhabi school of Sunni Islam have long dismissed Shi’ites as virtual heretics and Saudi Arabia’s Shi’ite minority complains of second class treatment.But Barrak’s fatwa was the strongest in recent years.

The fatwa, which was published on Barrak’s Web site in response to a follower’s question, also appeared to criticise efforts by some government-backed Saudi preachers at reconciliation between Sunnis and Shi’ites.

Saudi Arabia fears that violence between Sunnis and Shi’ites could lead to the break-up of Iraq and spill over its borders.

Barrak was among 38 clerics who issued a statement this month calling on world Sunnis to support their brethren in Iraq.

Are you a post-gothic young man or woman with no sense of hexakosioihexekontahexaphobiacs?

In my younger days I resembled a little bit like a gothic so my current position as an academic researcher must come as no surprise for you. I wonder if the nice and sweet youngsters of today can look back in joy as much as I do. Getting older of course means in increasing sense of hexakosioihexekontahexaphobiacs but the solution is keeping fit by drinking camel milk and keeping strong by mental muscle exercise and explore those worlds where no man has gone before.

I admit, this post is only written because of the beautiful word: hexakosioihexekontahexaphobiacs. This and the rest is based upon the things we did not know last year.

Je lanceert een nieuw radiostation, je trekt daarvoor Ali B. uit de kast en laat hem in Staphorst een zoveel-honderdduizendklapper afsteken terwijl er een begrafenisdienst aan de gang is. Je publiceert een en ander in de krant en op Geenstijl en de vooroordelen en stereotypen vliegen je om de oren. Weten we zeker dat Pavlov zijn experiment op honden heeft uitgevoerd?

Vrouwenemancipatie onder moslims

Een tijd geleden al kreeg ik na een lezing van mij over gender en jonge Marokkaanse moslims te horen dat het toch belachelijk was dat ik als blanke man iets meende te kunnen over vrouwen. Nu is het veel gehoord misverstand dat gender over vrouwen gaat, net als het een misstand is dat in sommige studies over moslims vrouwen buiten beschouwing worden gelaten.

Het onderwerp gender en moslims is te belangrijk om niet te behandelen en aangezien ik niet van plan om een sekseverandering te ondergaan en ik ook niet te lang in de zon wil zitten vanwege mijn zonne-allergie, zult u het toch op deze manier met mij moeten doen.

Het onderwerp is belangrijk niet alleen vanwege het normatieve aspect van gelijkwaardigheid tussen man en vrouw, maar ook doordat we met een focus op de relatie tussen mannen en vrouwen veel issues kunnen behandelen die ook op andere terreinen van studies over moslims van belang zijn. Als vrouwen inderdaad beweren (en ja dat doen de meesten) dat de sluier hun eigen vrije keuze is, hoe zit het dan met de invloed van de omgeving? En wat betekent dat voor een begrip als individualisering? Als vrouwen inderdaad zich emanciperen niet ten koste van de islam, maar door de islam (wat velen ook beweren) hoe doen ze dat dan en welke religieuze autoriteiten volgen ze? Op welke bronnen beroepen ze zich?

Nu is er onder moslima’s veel aan de gang en er zijn zeer veel iniatieven die zich bijna allemaal kenmerken door een combinatie van vrouwelijke identiteit, moslimidentiteit en burgerschap in Nederland. Het recente Islamitisch Vrouwen Manifest (IV/M), is daar een uitstekend voorbeeld maar ook de twee (ja twee) burqa-demonstraties in Den Haag zeer recentelijk. Het is echter een misverstand om te denken dat de aandacht onder moslimvrouwen voor emancipatie en burgerschap iets van de laatste tijd is. Volgend jaar bestaat de Marokkaanse Vrouwen Vereniging Nederland 25 jaar en deze club is al die tijd zeer actief geweest (niet noodzakelijkerwijze vanuit religieus perspectief). Andere clubs zijn bijvoorbeeld Al Amal (actief sinds 2000) en niet te vergeten Vangnet, ontstaan vanuit een vrouwengroep in moskee Badr in Amsterdam.

In de discussies gaat het over het algemeen niet over autochtone moslima’s, maar om migranten en de dochters van deze migranten. Dat maakt vrouwenemancipatie altijd een tricky onderwerp; iedereen bemoeit zich ermee en soms lijkt de discussie eerder op een beschavingsoffensief gericht op de mensen van buiten zeker wanneer integratie én emancipatie aan elkaar gekoppeld worden. De voortgang in vrouwenemancipatie en de emancipatiebeweging zijn daardoor vaak afhankelijk van de grillen van anderen en het hangt er maar vanaf hoe de religieuze en politieke wind waait. Een voorbeeld uit het buitenland is bijvoorbeeld het verhaal over de Syrische vrouwenemancipatiebeweging vanaf begin 1900.

Een manier om vrouwen onafhankelijker te maken is natuurlijk allereerst eens naar hen zelf te luisteren, maar bijvoorbeeld ook door migrantenvrouwen een zelfstandig verblijfsrecht te geven (iets waar vrouwen zelf al jarenlang voor vechten overigens).

VPRO – Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus

Gisteren bij de VPRO: Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus. Eindelijk weer eens iets op tv waarvoor het de moeite waard is om op te blijven.

Documentairemaker Andrew Douglas wíl het Zuiden van Amerika leren kennen. Geinspireerd door Jim White‘s korte verhaal The Mysterious Tale of How I Shouted Wrong-Eyed Jesus vraagt hij White om als verteller op te treden. De docu is eigenlijk een soort roadmovie waarin ieder stadje haar eigen mythes heeft over het leven in ‘the South’. De docu zit dan ook vol met verhalen, verhalen en nog eens verhalen. Om geen genoeg van te krijgen. Verhalen zijn nooit zomaar verhalen. Verhalen zeggen iets over de persoon die ze vertelt, de periode waarin hij leeft en de plaats waar hij zich bevindt. In al deze verhalen zijn zwanger van de Heer en ook de duivel is nooit ver weg. Zo geven deze verhalen ook nog eens weer wat voor de verteller goed en kwaad is.

De rode draad is Jim White die je met zijn auto vol met ‘Alabama lak’ meeneemt naar de gevangenen van Concordia Parish Correctional Facility die openlijk vertellen over hun leven en hoe ze in de nor zijn beland. Daarna kom je in een kerk met een ‘re-born’ dominee en vervolgens in een truckerrestaurant waar ‘verdwaalde’ truckers de weg naar de heer kunnen vinden en dan weer aan een bar waar we een dominee aantreffen die het pad van die heer heeft verlaten. Het mooie is dat White je echt mee lijkt te nemen op zijn reis en dat je gezamenlijk in het ene na het andere verhaal valt.

Klein minpuntje: de muziek van David Eugene Edwards en Sixteen Horsepower is er een beetje uit gevallen. Geen muziek die een zo mooie grauwe mengeling is van de heer en de duivel.

Al met al een prachtig, meeslepend maar bij tijd en wijle ook ontroerend en deprimerend beeld van ‘the deep south’.

Distributing Eid and Christmas gifts to Iraqi orphans
A decade of primary and secondary education at an evangelical Anglican school was enough to get me addicted to church music. Each Christmas, I try to join friends at Midnight Mass at Sydney’s St Mary’s Cathedral. It is an extraordinary experience, with both organs playing simultaneously as the choir roams among the congregation in procession singing carols.

This year, I’m joining my partner and her family for Christmas on the Sunshine Coast. It will be my first Christmas in the land of the cane toad. It will also roughly coincide with Eid al-Adha, the most important feast of the Muslim calendar coinciding with the annual pilgrimage known as the Haj.

This year hasn’t exactly been a bumper year for relations between the nominally Christian and Muslim sections of the planet. Muslims accuse Christians of taking hypocritical stands in the Middle East, and Christians accuse Muslims of behaving like drama queens in response to a dozen Danish cartoons and one papal speech.

Tolerance and freedom of expression

Dutch queen Beatrix delivered her traditional christmas speech yesterday. At the core of this speech was her message that tolerance and freedom of expression are the cornerstones of democracy. And indeed, there is no democracy without the freedom of expression and without tolerance. At the same time she stated that both are not unlimited: incitement to hatred cannot be tolerated and freedom of speech does not mean that there is a right to insult.
These limits on tolerance and freedom of expression should not be explained as ‘dhimmitude’ or as giving victory to those dreadful Muslims. In some circles (link refers to a website; not the webmaster is meant by my remark but some of the visitors – Dutch) freedom of expression seems to be more and more explained as the duty to insult Muslims or to reveal the ‘truth‘ as loud and as confronting as possible, if you don’t you are politically correct and you don’t fit in. Perhaps if people don’t use the freedom of expression in most blatant way, they are afraid to lose it at all? It is usually used as an attempt to disqualify those (non-)Muslims who do not reject islam by definition, who state you should try to establish a dialogue even with hardline islamists, meaning taking the arguments (and not necessarily their actions) of islamists serious. The argument of dhimmitude results in taking your own stance as self evident, something that does not need any further examination, while the argument of the other is obviously wrong because you hold the monopoly on the truth.

So no, there should be no right to insult. The public debate should be based on ratio, a correct display of facts and opinions and should be accesible to everyone; even those whose arguments we don’t like. Shutting them up by saying that they are dhimmi’s is not a sign of rational debate; only a sign of a shortage or weakness of rational arguments. And no there should be no right not to be insulted. Because sometimes people will be insulted by the mere fact that you exist, let alone when you speak up. Allowing for a right not to be insulted would mean that individuals of whatever religious, ideological or whatever conviction are able to decide for others what can be said or cannot be said only by invoking something that is so vague as feeling offended. If people feel offended by seeing women with headscarves, it’s should be their bad luck not of those women. If people feel offended by others who ridicule their religious or ideological convictions, it is should be their bad luck and not of those ridicule. Of course they do have the right to protest, demonstrate, ridicule back; that is their right as well. And if others feel offended by that, bad luck for you. Freedom of expression and tolerance belong to each other; without tolerance no freedom of expression and without freedom expression tolerance is just another hollow expression.

At the same time what is wrong with trying to be correct and not to generalize too much? What is wrong with being decent and to try not to add insult to injury? What is wrong with trying to take feelings of others into account? In other words: what is wrong with self-censorship?

Harvard Film Archive’s Steffen Pierce to Debut Feature Film Saturday – HCL News – Harvard College Library
In the 1980s when Steffen Pierce, Assistant Curator of the Harvard Film Archive, spent several years working as a photographer in southern Spain, he fell in love with the country and culture of nearby Morocco, and took advantage of the opportunity to visit close to every other month. Later when a New York producer hired him to return to Morocco and Algiers to write a script on the French historical figure Charles de Foucauld, he took the job—but the film was never made. In frustration, Pierce decided to turn to small-budget films that he could make himself. Two decades later, Pierce, working in collaboration with brother and fellow filmmaker Christian, has channeled his familiarity with Morocco to produce two movies filmed there on location.

This Saturday, December 16, Pierce and his brother will debut their feature film, Marrakech Inshallah, at the HFA in a special screening and meet-the-director event. Pierce, who has been with the HFA for 15 years, was motivated to make the fictional film after his experiences with the brothers’ first movie made on Moroccan soil, the documentary The Bride Market of Imilchil (1988). At the time, the Pierces interviewed two dozen individuals for their film and only later, after they had returned to the United States, learned that everyone they’d spoken to had been arrested and “re-interviewed” by Moroccan authorities.

Weblog Wijblijvenhier.nl organiseert de online verkiezing ‘Moslim van het Jaar 2006’

Vanaf vrijdag 22 december 2006 kan er op de website www.moslimvanhetjaar.nl gestemd worden op zowel de ‘Moslim van het Jaar’ als de ‘Islamitische organisatie van het jaar’. Deze lijst bevat 11 vooraanstaande Nederlandse moslims en 7 Islamitische organisaties die elk op hun eigen manier ons het afgelopen jaar positief zijn opgevallen in Nederland. Bezoekers van deze populaire weblog kunnen hun stem op de website uitbrengen. De uitslag van de verkiezing wordt op dinsdag 10 januari 2007 bekend gemaakt. Vorig jaar werd de verkiezing gewonnen door PSV-voetballer Ibrahim Afellay.

Aan het einde van ieder jaar komen overal allerlei lijstjes te staan met de beste of opmerkelijkste gebeurtenissen, producten of personen van het afgelopen jaar. Er zijn duizend-en-één categorieën en sinds vorig jaar dus ook de categorie ‘Moslim van het Jaar’. Er zijn moslims uit allerlei verschillende gelederen genomineerd om zo een volledig en gevarieerd geheel te krijgen waaruit gestemd kan worden. De volledige lijst van genomineerden is aan het einde van dit persbericht opgenomen.

Wijblijvenhier.nl is een populaire Islamitische weblog die u de kans geeft uw eigen conclusies te trekken, via verhalen van onze bloggers. Elke dag worden er nieuwe ervaringen gedeeld, het hart uitgestort en een blik gegund in de ‘wondere wereld’ van de Nederlandse Moslim.

Een talentvolle redactie met verschillende etnische achtergonden en interesses probeert een reëel beeld te schetsen van wat er leeft bij de Moslims binnen de Nederlandse samenleving. Dat doen ze met scherpe analyses, interessante visies, humoristische anekdotes en nog veel meer. Holocaust: Memorial, Denial and Resistance (meanwhile in the blogosphere…)

Khaled Mahameed opened a modest Holocaust museum, Arab Institute for Holocaust Research and Education, in his office in the predominantly Arab town of Nazareth 18 months ago. It has some 80 photographs with (translated) Arab captions but not much visitors though.

It seems that the museum is controversial both on Jewish side as on Arab side:

Mr Mahameed said his efforts had left him ostracised by friends and snubbed by his own brother. School officials in Nazareth have turned down his offers to host pupils. At the same time, Jewish leaders who at first praised his plans say the exhibit may do more harm than good by including a Palestinian flag and images of Arab refugees who fled or were expelled from their homes as war broke out when Israel was founded in 1948.

Since a group’s involvement in atrocities is never a black and white picture but, as in the Dutch case with the holocaust, more a matter of many grey areas with a few real heros and a few real villains, it might be better as a start to include also stories and evidence about Arabs who helped Jews during those terrible years.

Je kunt het hoofd in de schoot werpen, maar als je dat probeert terwijl je achter je pc zit, is de kans groot dat je je bureau raakt. Dat gebeurt over het algemeen tijdens een acute aanval van moedeloosheid. Als je bij Word na de vraag opslaan, ja, nee, annuleren, klikt op nee terwijl het ja had moeten zijn en je had net die hele dag aan die ene zin lopen sleutelen. Of als je een radicaliserende collega uitlegt dat de media echt niet de islam overal bij sleept en terwijl je een hartstochtelijk pleidooi houdt over de redelijkheid van de Nederlandse media komt het volgende bericht uit de Telegraaf voorbij:

Terwijl toch echt, notabene in dat bericht zelf, het voornamelijk gaat om KERKEN! Het gaat dan ook om Amsterdam Zuid-Oost waar inderdaad veel kerken staan en waar veel (migranten-)christenen wonen. Foute kop dus en het woord koppensneller krijgt bij mij ineens de grimmige betekenis die het eigenlijk toch al had.

En alsof het dan nog niet genoeg is, komt Trouw (maar staat ook in Telegraaf):

De publieke omroepen hebben voor tientallen tv-programma’s doelen gesteld voor de aantallen multiculturele onderwerpen en allochtone studiogasten en presentatoren die in de programma’s moeten voorkomen.

Neehee, in dat plan gaat het erom dat de publieke omroep een nauwkeurige afspiegeling moet zijn van de Nederlandse bevolking. Dus ook meer jongeren, vrouwen, ouderen enzovoorts. Ja, eigenlijk iedereen behalve mannen zoals ik. Maar wat doet men? Men gaat quota verzinnen voor allochtonen want het moet multiculti achtiger. Met andere woorden we hebben een Nederlands hoekje en een multiculti hoekje en die twee moeten dichter bij elkaar, maar het blijven twee aparte hoekjes. Fout dus, precies het omgekeerde van wat men wil. Het gaat erom allochtonen aan het woord te laten ook als het gaat om onderwerpen die niet allochtoon-specifiek zijn, of jongeren aan het woord te laten als het over ouderen gaat, of vrouwen als het gaat over mannen zoals ik. Dit is multiculti gefröbel dat precies het tegenover gestelde bewerkstelligd dat wat volgens mij de bedoeling is. Er bestaat niet zoiets als een Nederlandse samenleving en een multiculturele samenleving. Nog afgezien van de gladiolen die ook hier gelijk de islam weer bijhalen terwijl daar helemaal niks over gezegd is. Alsof multicultureel per definitie islam betekent en dat is dan natuurlijk slecht. Nog afgezien van de racistische onzin die Geenstijl.nl ons nu weer voorschotelt. De wijze waarop gereageerd wordt laat zien dat we in een acute kramp schieten als het gaat om de multiculturele samenleving, islam en wat allemaal nog meer. En daar krijg ik dan weer hoofdpijn van.

Religie, secularisering, publiek domein en de WRR

De opleving van traditioneel geloof, uitingen van radicale religie en nieuwe religieuze vormen stellen de overheid voor nieuwe vragen hoe zij met religie zou kunnen omgaan. Voor de Wetenschappelijke Raad voor het Regeringsbeleid (WRR) reden om in kaart te brengen welke veranderingen zich voltrekken in het domein van geloof en religie en wat dit kan betekenen voor de overheid. Het eerste resultaat van deze verkenning is een bundel van wetenschappelijke essays en studies die onder de titel Geloven in het publieke domein, Verkenningen van een dubbele transformatie als WRR-Verkenning nr. 13 is uitgegeven.
Lange tijd is gedacht dat steeds minder mensen in Nederland zich als gelovig beschouwden. De ‘ontkerkelijking’ werkte ook door in het beleid van de overheid. Er lijkt de laatste jaren echter sprake van een opmerkelijke ‘comeback’ van religie. Religie en geloof zijn weer onderwerp van gesprek en studie. Dat valt niet alleen te verklaren door de opkomst van de islam in onze samenleving. Ook de al dan niet vermeende terugkeer van het traditionele geloof en opkomende nieuwe vormen van religieuze beleving maken dat religie zich weer meer manifesteert in het publieke domein. Vraagstukken die voortvloeien uit die verbinding tussen religie en publiek domein lijken niet langer te kunnen worden beantwoord met een enkele verwijzing naar de scheiding van kerk en staat.

Zo begint het persbericht van de WRR naar aanleiding van de publicatie van haar nieuwe studie Geloven in het publieke domein. Verkenningen van een dubbele transformatie (W.B.H.J. van de Donk, A.P. Jonkers, G.J. Kronjee en R.J.J.M. Plum, red.).

Het begin duidt op een steeds vaker gehoorde stelling dat religie terug is van weggeweest. Het is maar de vraag of religie inderdaad terug is van weggeweest. De opvatting dat secularisering religie terugdringt gaat uit van een erg statische definitie van religie, maar religie past zich natuurlijk aan, aan de maatschappelijke omstandigheden. De behoefte aan zingeving is daarbij niet verdwenen, maar uit zich in andere vormen van religie terwijl de instituties zich zo goed en kwaad als het kan aanpassen. Daarbij is het ook nog maar de vraag of religie echt helemaal terug is en of de veranderingen die zich voordoen, de voortschrijdende secularisering echt aantasten. Van belang daarbij is dat secularisering niet alleen een neutrale beschrijving is, maar ook een norm. Bijvoorbeeld de norm dat religie een privé-zaak is en niet thuishoort in het publieke domein. De zichtbaarheid van de islam tast die norm aan, mede doordat de veronderstelling is dat een toenemende islamisering ook betekent dat intolerantie ten opzichte van niet-gelovigen en andersgelovigen zal toenemen en dat Nederland/Het Westen wordt overgenomen door moslims.  (more…)

Dutch National Faces U.S. Terror Trial – Forbes.com

A court on Tuesday rejected a last-ditch attempt to block the extradition of a Dutch citizen charged with terror attacks on American troops in his native Iraq in 2003.Wesam al Delaema, 32, is set to become the first suspect tried in a U.S. court for alleged terrorism in Iraq’s bloody insurgency. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Al Delaema says he is innocent. His attorneys have argued the U.S. does not have the right to try their client, that he could be tortured by U.S. authorities and that the American legal system cannot be trusted.

U.S. authorities said al Delaema will be tried in a federal court, not by a military commission such as those set up for terror suspects being held at Guantanamo Bay. They also said they would not be opposed to al Delaema serving his sentence in a Dutch prison if he is convicted.

“There is no reason to believe that the U.S. authorities will not abide by the commitments they have given or … deprive the suspect of his fundamental rights,” a judge at the court in The Hague said in Tuesday’s decision.

It was not clear when al Delaema would be flown out of the Netherlands. He is charged in the U.S. with possession of explosives and conspiracy to use them in an attack.

Evidence against al Delaema includes a videotape he filmed of a group called “Warriors of Fallujah” preparing a roadside bomb, which was widely shown on Arabic TV stations. The tape was seized by police who raided al Delaema’s house in Amersfoort in May 2005 following a tip from U.S. authorities.

Al Delaema argued he was forced to make the video after being kidnapped and beaten. He said he feared being beheaded if he resisted.

In a 2003 interview broadcast on Dutch television, al Delaema accused the U.S. and its allies of waging war in Iraq to control its oil reserves.

“I don’t care if I myself die or not. I want to offer myself up for my land, for my people,” he said in the interview.

His family has said the interview was a joke.
