WASHINGTON — In his book Heavy Metal Islam: Rock, Resistance, and the Struggle for the Soul of Islam, University of California-Irvine professor Mark LeVine explains why harsh melodies appeal to young Muslims in the Middle East.
He believes young people in the Middle East turn to heavy metal music as an act of rebellion against oppression, censorship and authoritarianism.
IslamOnline.net interviewed Professor LeVine about how heavy metal in the Middle East reflects the existing and changing social conditions in the region.
