The crisis of universalism: America and radical Islam after 9/11 Fred Halliday – openDemocracy

“In a trenchant analysis of the post-9/11 world, Fred Halliday documents the two-sided assault both by the United States and its fundamentalist enemies on universal principles. Can citizens of the world retrieve a confident, humane politics from beneath the rubble?”
[…]
The crisis of universalism, the weakness of the traditional nation-states, and the militarised character of world politics today, together mean that the major issues already confronting the world before 9/11, none of which have become easier since then, are being increasingly neglected. The existence of specific transnational problems like the spread of HIV/Aids and narco-trafficking is sufficient evidence of this. Moreover, none of the interethnic conflicts that fuel public support for Osama bin Laden have been resolved, most notably the Palestine question.

The most important of all these issues is the profound inequality in global conditions of wealth and life between the rich elites of the OECD states and the rest of the world. This polarisation lies at the heart of the pressure to migrate to the richer states of the world, of the corrupt character of many states, and of the rising world resentment of the west, and especially of the United States. “

African Studies Centre – CONFLICT IN SUDAN: THE CASE OF DARFUR

The Library, Documentation and Information Department of the African Studies Centre Leiden has compiled a web dossier on conflict in Sudan, and especially Darfur, to coincide with a workshop held at the ASC on 10 September 2004. The workshop brought together scholars involved in African Studies and journalists with a special interest in Africa in order to exchange ideas on information gathering and media coverage of African issues, in particular conflicts and war. The current crisis in Darfur was
discussed as an example. The dossier aims to give background information on the Darfur crisis within the context of the wider conflict in Sudan. It contains a selection of titles from the ASC library’s online catalogue on Darfur, the conflict in Sudan, and media coverage of conflicts in Africa in general, covering monographs as well as articles and chapters from edited works. The dossier further contains an introduction on the Darfur crisis and links to selected web resources.

French Muslim policewoman refuses to take off headscarf

” PARIS, Sept 13 (AFP) – A Muslim policewoman in Paris has annoyed her superiors and stoked a running national debate in France over Islamic headscarves after refusing to take off her own headwear on religious grounds, the city police chief and a police union said Monday.
The woman, a traffic officer identified only as Nora C., refused an order on August 25 to take off a small headscarf that she wears under her uniform cap, the union said, confirming a report in the newsmagazine L’Express.”

Yahoo Sponsored Al Qaeda Bulletin Board Still Spewing Out Terrorist Hatred On Third Anniversary of 9/11 – Jeremy Reynalds

“Three years after 9/11, a video available for download through a link on an Internet bulletin board service regarded by many terror experts as being a prime means of communication for al Qaeda operatives makes an apparent attempt to justify the attacks. ”

This article refers to Global Islamic Media. If you ‘google’ this, you will find lots of information. The yahoogroup is disabled at the moment just as is its sucessor ilislami.

Al-Khansa – Helping women balance family life, jihad

Posted on September 14th, 2004 by .

Asia Times – Asia’s most trusted news source for the Middle East

Helping women balance family life, jihad by Sudha Ramachandran. Al-Khansa seems to be the buzz-word these days. “A new women’s magazine, al-Khansa, has recently been launched on the Internet. In itself, this is an unremarkable event, but unlike other women’s magazines, this one is likely to evoke immense interest among terrorism and counter-terrorism experts rather than the target readership themselves – Muslim women. ”
[…]
“In fact, al-Khansa exploits the woman’s traditional role in family and society as mother and nurturer of her children to get them to play a larger role in the jihad.” […]
“Radical Islamist groups are of course not the only ones calling on women to sacrifice their children for the cause. Governments, too, expect women to cheerfully send off their sons and husbands to the battlefield “to die for the flag, protect territory and the country’s national security” and to not grieve when they are killed. Only their effort to draw women into war is more subtle and sophisticated. “

TIME Magazine Archive Preview — Struggle For The Soul Of Islam — Sep. 13, 2004

“Three years after 9/11, an inside look at the ongoing global battle between moderates and hard-liners over the future of a faithand its relationship with the West
By BILL POWELL
Four years ago, Mohammed Shakr sent his son away. Shakr (not his real name) lives in Baghdad, where he works as a translator, and he wanted the young man, Omar, to escape the oppression of Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. So he sent Omar to a vocational school in the United Arab Emirates, where he studied automotive maintenance. But as the years went by, Shakr, 50, began to be worried about his son. Omar wrote letters to his father, a smoker, lecturing him about Islam’s disdain for tobacco. He chided his mother for wearing Western-style clothes to work.”

We are so Sorry for 9-11: Free Muslim Coalition Against Terrorism

Freemuslims.org apoligizes for 9/11 and plea towards fellow muslims for a reflection on their own beliefs. A nice gesture in my opinion but also one that gives me an unpleasant feeling, because is it really necessary for muslims who had no part in the atrocities whatsoever, to apoligize for that?

Marcel Mring: Het idee van je leven. De wanhopige vraag naar het waarom.

Marcel Mring

Arab Academics Still Claim 9/11 Was American Conspiracy — 09/10/2004

“Academics and others in the Arab and Muslim world continue to circulate conspiracy theories that blame the U.S. and/or Israel for the 2001 terrorist attacks on America.”
[…]
But there are some moderate voices in the Arab world like Sheik Abd Al-Hamid Al-Ansari, former dean of faculty of Shari’a at the University of Qatar, who have encouraged Muslims to engage in some soul-searching.

“Why won’t we [Arabs] take the opportunity of the appearance of the September 11 commission’s report to ponder why destructive violence and a culture of destruction have taken root in our society?” Al-Ansari wrote in the London based Arabic daily Al-Hayat on August 2.”

International terrorism as an optical illusion?

The link below refers to a pdf-file (in dutch).

International Terrorism by prof. dr. Rik Coolsaet and Teun van de Voorde (Gent
University)

Walter Laqueur, author of “Terrorism” (1977) notes in 1985: “[Historians] will note that presidents and other leaders frequently referred to terrorism as one of the greatest dangers facing mankind. For days and weeks on end, television networks devoted most of their prime-time news to covering terrorist operations. Publicists referred to terrorism as the cancer of the world, growing inexorably until it poisoned and engulfed the society on which it fed. [] In countless articles and books, our historian will read about the constantly rising number of terrorist attacks. Being a conscientious researcher he will analyse
the statistics, which are bound to increase his confusion, for he will find that more American
civilians were killed in 1974 (22) than in 1984 (16). (Laqueur, Walter, Reflections on Terrorism. In: Foreign Affairs, Fall 1986, Vol. 65, nr. 1, pp. 86-100)

Besides the ‘normal’ 9/11 remembrance, their are also some holy feasts today. One of them is Milad un Nabi; the birth of the prophet Muhammed.
BBC – Religion & Ethics – Milad un Nabi

The other one is Paryushana, a time of reflection and repentance for the Jain devotee.

And not to forget the Ethiopian new year for the Rastafarians (and others of course).

Strangers: Muslims Living Outside Dar-Ul-Islam: Rights And Obligations

Home / Headlines / Strangers: Muslims Living Outside Dar-Ul-Islam: Rights And Obligations – Media Monitors Network (MMN)

“Traditionally we find that the world was grossly seen as consisting of three realms, the Drul-Islm, “Realm of Islam where Islamic norms and values are valid so that a Muslim can feel safe and at home even though he is not yet familiar with the language and culture; Drul-Harb, the “Realm of War” where a hostile attitude against Muslims is to be expected; and Drus-Sulh, the “Realm of a Legal Order or Peace” where a public order is prevalent in which Muslims can find a safe place. Traditional models for these three cases would be Madina, Makkah and Abyssinia, respectively, during the early period of Islam. We can clearly see that these terms need a careful general revision both on the background of the principles proposed in Qur’an and Sunnah and considering the modern world.”
