Nederlanders doden 18 Afghaanse strijders

Met deze post ga ik waarschijnlijk een groot risico lopen, maar vooruit: Nederlanders doden 18 Afghaanse strijders – telegraaf.nl en Nederlanders doden 18 Afghanen – AD.nl
De genuanceerde koppen in de Telegraaf en het AD bevallen me wel, maar dan de reacties! Kijk, ik snap ook wel dat het daar oorlog is en dat ‘we’ op een democratische manier ‘onze jongens’ een oorlog hebben ingestuurd (onder het mom van een humanitaire actie) en dat er in een oorlog met scherp geschoten wordt snap ik ook; ik zou me ook niet laten afschieten.

Maar moeten die reacties nou?

Benieuwd wat het OM hier mee gaat doen. Lijkt me toch iets meer dan de heksenjacht op Erik O. Misschien is het verstandig om de top van het OM mee te laten draaien. Dan kan zij op niveau ervaren en mee beslissen of er een wel of niet veilige omgeving voor de werkzaamheden voor onze jongens gehandhaafd kan worden.

Walgelijk Nederland is dus al even erg als Israel, Amerika en de NAVO kruisvaarders door onschuldige burgers te vermoorden en te bombarderen. Mijn complimenten voor onze soldaten, geen genade voor moslim-extremisten, afmaken dat schoorm, die mensen willen helemaal geen democratie, nee natuurlijk niet, je moet naar hun pijpen dansen en voor de rest je mond houden. Ik hoop op nog veel meer van dit soort positieve reakties van ons leger.

Wacht maar tot we een paar jaar verder zijn, kijken of de stemming onder de rechtse rakkers dan nog zo positief is. In Vietnam destijds zouden de Amerikanen ook even snel orde op zaken gaan stellen. We weten hoe dat is afgelopen. Mijn mening is onveranderd, het is en blijft daar een wespennest en dat zal zo blijven.

Is dit bekendmaken wel tactisch en/of verstandig? Nu krijgen onze jongens en meiden het in Afghanistan misschien nog moeilijker. Dat ze het gedaan hebben is volgens mij begrijpelijk in een oorlog.Prima dus, maar om dan de P.R.te zoeken lijkt me dom. Waarschijnlijk hebben die “stuurlui” in Den Haag daar geen oren naar.

Dat is de eerste pagina, maar gelukkig komen daarna nog wel wat genuanceerdere reacties. Zelfde patroon bij het AD.nl

Alle lof en steun voor onze NL Commando’s die in de oorlog tegen het terrorsme , dit getal van 18 zullen verhonderdvoudigen.
Natuurlijk zal de linkse kerk onder leiding van Groen links trachtten om verdeeldheid te zaaien, maar ik ben ervan overtuigd dat de grote meerderheid van Nederland vierkant achter deze acties staat.

Het lijkt er op (de genuanceerdere reageerders even buiten beschouwing gelaten) dat we een oorlogszuchtig volkje geworden zijn en de strijd in Afghanistan gebruiken als spiegel (vergrootglas) voor onze eigen interne tegenstellingen. Gebeurt niet alleen hier overigens, een filmpje met propaganda voor de gewelddadige jihad met daarop doodskisten met Nederlandse vlaggen bestaat ook al enige tijd. De Telegraaf vat het nog eens keurig samen onder de kop Trots, maar ongerust, waarbij ze dan opvallend genoeg die ene reactie van Omar niet noemen terwijl die toch wel enige consternatie heeft veroorzaakt bij de andere reageerders.

Dan nog even wat over die andere oorlog; in Libanon. Ik vind de verslaggeving erover in het algemeen heel behoorlijk; men doet in ieder geval echt een poging om beide zijden van het verhaal te laten zien zowel bij RTL4 als bij de Publieke Omroep. Maar zoals OPlawaai, al opmerkte, waarom moet dat in bijna alle gevallen gaan om mensen met Nederlandse loyaliteiten. Ze spreken Nederlands meestal da’s natuurlijk wel zo makkelijk, maar zijn we hier in Nederland dan zover verwijderd geraakt van de internationale wel en wee dat we alleen nog maar kunnen meeleven als er Nederlanders bij betrokken zijn (zoals bij de tsunami in Java; eerst geen later wel Nederlandse slachtoffers….en die mensen daar dan). Of hoort dat bij de emo-tv van tegenwoordig? Of sta ik gewoon te ver van de moderne medemens om dat nog te snappen? Ik heb daar overigens wel een ideetje voor dat ik binnen 48 uur eens zal lanceren.

Can the clash between scantily clad secularism and conservative religious ideology produce a third way in the Arab world? Some wish according to Allegra Stratton’s fascinating exploration of this question, Muhajababes, writes Rachel Aspden.

As a guide to the preoccupations of young Arabs, the Middle-Eastern chaos currently splashed across the front pages is only part of the story. Vying with bearded Hizbollah commanders for the hearts and minds (or at least cash and attention) of Middle-Eastern youth is a well-funded and altogether better-looking army: a gang of half-naked girls. Stars of the omnipresent Arabic music videos (‘video-clips’), the girls – led by Maria, Elissa, Ruby, Nancy Ajram and Haifa Wehbe – are the region’s super-groomed, cosmetically enhanced sweethearts – or its ‘porno clip devils’, according to one Egyptian newspaper. Their grip on ‘the morals of Arab youth’ is so strong that in 2004 conservative Egyptian MPs called for a ban on the clips – supported by letters and petitions from young Egyptians.

But how do the region’s armies of under-30 video-lovers and haters square up? In early 2005 Allegra Stratton, a young BBC producer, set off on a tour of Beirut, Amman, Cairo, Dubai, Kuwait City and Damascus with the aim of finding out.

Stratton is in search of a cultural revolution – experts on the Middle East have told her that a massive rise in the number of educated young people coupled with a stunted job market have led to a situation that parallels the English Civil War, the French Revolution and 1968. So, at first, she goes looking for a Haight-Ashbury-type counterculture, hanging out with TV producers, struggling artists, MCs and curators.

Her findings are less romantic than she had hoped (more…)

Brendan O’Neill has an interesting article on Devji’s book Landscapes of Jihad; in my opinion a must read (so when will I start reading it…)

Devji cuts through the two most common perceptions about al-Qaeda: that it is political or religious. In fact, he says, it cannot be understood as a political movement in any traditional sense; indeed, it has dispensed with ‘an old-fashioned politics tied to states and citizenship’ (1). It is not traditionally religious, either, he argues, in the sense that it does not follow any recognisable Islamic hierarchy and chops and changes the religious justifications for its actions.

Devji argues that al-Qaeda is better understood as a new global movement more interested in making ‘ethical’ gestures than winning territory or building a state. The contemporary jihad, he argues, ‘is more a product of the media than it is of any local tradition or situation and school or lineage of Muslim authority…. [T]he jihad itself can be seen as an offspring of the media, composed as it is almost completely of pre-existing media themes, images and stereotypes.’ (2)

Most of the London bombers’ acts of bonding occurred in public – not in mosques but on rafting expeditions and at ink-ball shooting games, in clubs and gyms. There is nothing traditionally religious, or private, about that.

‘These men do not cut themselves off from British society; instead their politics and their bonding are conducted in the full glare of public scrutiny. They are made by the world we live in.’

Devji says the London bombers, and other al-Qaeda-style terrorists, appear to be driven more by pity than political conviction or ambition – and that this, too, is a common trend today. ‘Pity can be dangerous, precisely because one is not personally involved in the suffering. One is acting, apparently, on behalf of others. You see this among leftist groups today, as well. It’s vicarious, it’s luxurious in a way, and luxuriant; it is also narcissistic. It is a very dangerous and bitter passion.

‘It is so impersonal, this kind of pity, that the terrorists seem to exhibit no hatred even towards their victims. Actually they blend in with them; they are like them. The London bombers didn’t have any history of exhibiting dislike or hatred, or removing themselves from British society. They got along fine with Britons and were exactly like them. It is precisely because the hatred and the pity is so abstract – so removed from traditional political or religious structures – that they seem not to be killing real people, in a sense. It is more abstract than that. These bombers really could say, “It’s nothing personal.”’

London: With a title like All Is War (The Benefits of G-Had) and a song about a suicide bomber, a new album by British Muslim rapper Nawaz has raised eyebrows before its release, even at his own record label.

The Pakistan-born rapper’s group Fun-Da-Mental were set to put the new disc on sale July 17, 10 days after the first anniversary of the London bombings. But its words and themes, another predicting US decline at the hands of Muslims, caused two directors at Nation Records to threaten to quit if All Is War hit the shops. “I know what I’m doing, everything I did was intentional,” a determined Nawaz said.

The release was held off, but Nation now says the album will come out online on August 7, then go on sale in stores on either August 14 or 21. Nawaz named the two who threatened to resign as Andrew Heath and Martin Mills, silent partners at Nation.

A spokesperson for Mills’s separate record label, Beggars Banquet, however said they would make no comment “at all” on the matter. For a group that has not tasted mainstream success, Fun-Da-Mental’s new album has generated plenty of media coverage. On the track list are titles like I Reject, Electro G-Had and Cookbook DIY, the last the voice of a suicide bomber that — given the timing — brings to mind the four, home-grown bombers who killed 56 people and wounded about 700 more in last July’s attack on the London transport network.
