Muslim world needs democracy, says Qaradawi

DOHA • Noted Islamic scholar Dr Yousuf Al Qaradawi has said the Muslim world needs democracy. The scholar, who is in Istanbul, Turkey to attend a conference, said: “The Muslim world needs democracy. It wants democracy. But it should be real democracy and not just democracy by name only.”

He added: “Democracy has done some good things. It has saved humanity from despots and dictators who act like gods. The details should be left to the people. Let them decide for themselves.”

He, however, added that democracy in the Muslim world would be different from what it is in Western countries. “This is because in Islam there are some fixed principles that cannot be changed. But there are some things where the people can call for change, depending on the time and place,” he said.

Goede vraag lijkt me. Er zijn wel wat uitzonderingen: zo lijkt de NIO vooral op de radio maar toch ook wel op TV aardig op weg om die krenten uit de nieuwspap te pakken die anderen laten liggen zoals het nieuws rondom Al Turabi.

Als er iets rampzaligs gebeurt in onze ex-koloniën, Suriname en Indonesië, zitten de Nederlandse media er bovenop, alsof het nog steeds een beetje onze wingewesten zijn. Ik weet niet hoe journalisten dit voor zichzelf rechtvaardigen, of ze bijvoorbeeld denken: dit zijn landen van herkomst van veel Nederlanders, dus laten we deze groep goed bedienen, zij zijn ook ons publiek.

Gesteld dat ze zo redeneren, hoe zit het dan met Marokko, Turkije, Irak, en al die andere landen van herkomst van honderdduizenden Nederlanders? In de kranten worden ze grosso modo niet anders behandeld dan al die andere landen waarmee Nederlanders met uitsluitend Nederlandse voorouders geen enkele band hebben. Op de televisie komen kijkers uit herkomstlanden als Marokko iets beter aan hun trekken, hoewel niet in de nieuwsprogramma’s, maar in apolitieke, human interest documentaires.

Ik ken Marokkanen en Turken die schitterend Nederlands spreken, schrijven en lezen, die echter al jaren geleden zijn opgehouden de krant te lezen, omdat er zo zelden iets over hun herkomstland in staat, en dan nog meestal vanuit Europese invalshoeken, dat het niet de moeite waard is een abonnement te nemen. Tegelijkertijd wordt hen verweten vooral naar buitenlandse satellietzenders te kijken.

Een dergelijke situatie treffen we aan in alle West-Europese landen, met kleine, historisch bepaalde nuances. De Britten doen meer aan India, de Duitsers aan Polen, de Italianen aan Libië, de Spanjaarden aan Zuid-Amerikaanse landen, Portugal aan Brazilië.

Assuming its fidelity to the word of Sayyid Qutb, the Muslim Brotherhood’s strategy is to cinch control over Egyptian politics and establish sharia through constitutional fiat. The most populous and geopolitically vital Arab nation would then go the way of Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Sudan to become an orthodox Islamic regime, perhaps to be joined one day by Iraq, Palestine, Pakistan, and possibly Syria and several of the lesser Gulf states.

Or not. It is just as likely that Brotherhood members really believe their big-tent talk of coalition-building and interfaith harmony. They may also know that hammering Arab states together into a borderless fiefdom is just as absurd and impractical as it was when Nasser and the Syrians tried it in 1958.

More important, however, is what the people in al Catatny’s chambers believe. If they think the Muslim Brotherhood is the only political group in Egypt with the commitment and resources to address their needs, then they will buoy the Brotherhood to power regardless of its intentions. If, on the other hand, there is a political awakening to match the Islamic one, with a proliferation of secular parties competing for voter loyalty, then the Brotherhood will have to reveal itself as either a center-right political party with an Islamist character or an Islamist movement with a regional agenda.

These are two different things. The former would appeal to the moderate sensibilities of most Egyptians. To follow this path would be to swap orthodoxy for legitimacy, an exchange familiar to all radicals who have traveled from the tributaries of politics to its main currents. The latter would alienate all but a small host of Egyptian radicals. To embrace it would be to strangle political Islam in its crib, as just another failed conceit of Arab self-government.

De heftige toon. Het verongelijkte en ongelikte. Wat-kan-mij-het-schelen. Ik-zeg-wat-ik-denk. Dat ongeveer is de populaire en populistische toon van de tweede generatie weblogs. GeenStijl is het bekendste voorbeeld. Blogs met namen als Retecool, Hersenscheet en Volkomenkut zitten of zaten pakweg in hetzelfde genre.

Die blogs zijn wat Pim Fortuyn was voor politiek Den Haag. Wat Andreas Gerardus Hazes, volgens Jan Blokker “de Pim Fortuyn onder de vocalisten”, was voor het Nederlandse lied. Ze zijn de stem des volks, even direct als authentiek, even rauw als sentimenteel.

Waarom zijn blogs rechts? Omdat ze als vanzelf anti-oude-media zijn. Ze zijn wat de traditionele, door babyboomers gedomineerde kranten en tijdschriften en publieke omroep allemaal niet zijn. Ze zijn open, dwars, tegendraads, rellerig, obstinaat en vaak nogal leuk.Blogs zijn zo rechts als de media van enig land links zijn. Althans in tweede instantie. In eerste instantie zijn ze niet zozeer anti-media als wel anti-orde. Zoals de grondleggers van internet links noch rechts waren (maar nerds met een aanstelling in wetenschap of defensie), zo waren de eerste bloggers progressief noch conservatief, volgens het techno-adagium “de waarheid is wat werkt”.

De tweede generatie bloggers zijn of waren tegen de media. Hoe linkser die zijn, hoe rechtser de bloggers (en ja, dat is een generalisatie). Wat opvalt is de kentering. Linkse bloggers komen op, zowel in Nederland als in de Verenigde Staten. Het lijkt een teken van herwonnen zelfvertrouwen. Links mag weer. De revolte is achter de rug.

Dit stuk heeft zo her en der in de blogosfeer nogal wat aandacht getrokken. Ik vind de vergelijking met de nationale uitingen van ongenoegen en rouw met Hazes en Fortuijn aardig gevonden, maar toch niet helemaal terecht om blogs dan maar rechts te noemen.

Blogs worden in de eerste plaats geschreven (of ze nu links, rechts of recht-door-zee zijn) door mensen die denken dat ze wat te melden hebben. Laten we nu even het über-voorbeeld Geenstijl.nl als voorbeeld te nemen. Dit weblog wordt her en der weg gezet als een moslimbashing-weblog. En dat is het ook. Soms door hypes in het leven te roepen door te beweren dat men achterhaald heeft wie Rahmetullah was. Waarschijnlijk waren ze destijds de enigen die niet wist dat het Ertan was aangezien de gegevens werkelijk overal op internet stonden en hij het zelf ook al gemeld had. De wereldschokkende ontdekking was waarschijnlijk vooral bedoeld om het eigen ego te boosten. Soms door allerlei flauwe tot walgelijke comments toe te laten al dan niet door het scheppen van alter ego’s die de vlam nog eens extra in de pan doen slaan. De opruiende kwaliteiten konden we onder andere zien na de moord op Van Gogh, maar ook daarvoor al. Hun teksten en zogenaamde scoops (opnieuw vooral hypes zoals met de filmpjes van Sluitjeaan waarbij men de eer van de ‘ontdekking’ naar zich toe trok en zich zo groot maakte over de ruggen van anderen) droegen tot begin 2004 bij aan een sfeer op internet die gezien kan worden als een opmaat voor de periode na mei 2004 toen de bedreigingen van Wilders en Hirsi Ali begonnen door middel van filmpjes (voor de goede orde niet van Geenstijl.nl maar van allerlei MSN-sites van jihadi’s). Maar men heeft het niet alleen tegen moslims, dat zou niet eerlijk zien. Rechts-radicalen zoals Nieuwrechts worden eveneens hard aangepakt op dezelfde manier: materiaal verzamelen dat her en der al lang bekend en besproken is, dat bij elkaar voegen en de scoop claimen. Ook Christenen moeten het ontgelden, in feite bijna alles wat religieus is.

Daarmee is Geenstijl.nl niet zozeer rechts, als wel een toonbeeld van hyperindividualistisch-narcisme. In al dat geweld is er immers slechts één baken van onbesproken gedrag dat overeind blijft: Geenstijl.nl. De bloggers zijn zelf de morele meetlat waarlangs alle gebeurtenissen gelegd en beoordeeld worden: individualisme bijna verheven tot het hoogste goed. Af en toe worden andere weblogs met die meetlat om de oren geslagen en, u raadt het al, dat moet bijna altijd slecht aflopen. Dat gebeurt dan niet zozeer door Geenstijl.nl zelf, maar wel door de bezoekers ervan. Daar kan Geenstijl.nl niks aan doen natúúrlijk, dat is collateral damage van hun eigen narcisme. Wat een ander doet, daar kun je immers zelf geen verantwoordelijkheid voor nemen vooral niet als je van jezelf weet dat je de universele waarheid in pacht hebt.

Natuurlijk heeft iedere weblogger iets Geenstijl-achtigs in zich (of dacht u nu werkelijk dat Geenstijl.nl bijzonder is?). Bijna iedere weblogger wil zijn/haar eigen morele standaard naar voren brengen en daar anderen mee om de oren slaan; inderdaad net zoals ik doe. En dat staat toch echt los van een links-rechts indeling lijkt me. En dat men daarvoor niet geweldig origineel hoeft te zijn, zomaar wat knip-en-plak-werk kan verrichten, paar nieuwe woorden genoeg zijn, bewijst Geenstijl.nl. Intussen linkt men wat naar elkaar, hyped men het een en ander, want je eigen unieke individualistische grootheid moet natuurlijk wel opgemerkt worden. En zo zitten bloggers gezellig met elkaar individualistisch te wezen. Dat is dan wel weer een aardige paradox.
