News on Van Gogh

Foreign News on Van Gogh’s Asassination:

The Dutch daily NRC has an overview of the foreign news-sources on the killing of Van Gogh (oh and please, no it’s not Vincent van Gogh but Theo van Gogh).

And please bear with me:
* we know Van Gogh is killed;
* we know the accused is a Moroccan-Dutch male;

We do NOT know:
* if he is a muslim
* why he committed this act (even if he is a muslims, that does not mean that an act by a muslim is a political, religious or even terrorist act)
* so we do not know if Van Gogh is killed because of his islam-bashing.

Dutch director Theo van Gogh murdered in Amsterdam

AMSTERDAM Film director Theo van Gogh was shot and killed in Amsterdam on Tuesday morning, his production company said.

“Locals claim the assassin looked like “a Muslim” and that a letter was left on Van Gogh’s body. The letter allegedly had Islamic text, but this has not been confirmed.

Van Gogh, 47, directed the controversial movie Submission written by Somali-born MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali which criticised the Koran for sanctioning domestic violence in Islamic communities.

He recently received numerous death threats following the release of Submission. He was also making a movie about populist Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn who was assassinated in Hilversum in May 2002. The film is due for release on the internet via Tiscali in several weeks time.

Meanwhile, RTL-Z business news reported that Hirsi Ali who wrote the scenario for the film Submission has been taken to a secure location by her protection officers. She has had armed protection for more than a year after her life was threatened when she criticised Islam. ”

ReligionResearch Islam Blog

In Trouw (Islam-strip

In zijn recente bundel ‘Not Passion’s Slave.

African Studies Centre – CONFLICT IN SUDAN: THE CASE OF DARFUR

The Library, Documentation and Information Department of the African Studies Centre Leiden has compiled a web dossier on conflict in Sudan, and especially Darfur, to coincide with a workshop held at the ASC on 10 September 2004. The workshop brought together scholars involved in African Studies and journalists with a special interest in Africa in order to exchange ideas on information gathering and media coverage of African issues, in particular conflicts and war. The current crisis in Darfur was
discussed as an example. The dossier aims to give background information on the Darfur crisis within the context of the wider conflict in Sudan. It contains a selection of titles from the ASC library’s online catalogue on Darfur, the conflict in Sudan, and media coverage of conflicts in Africa in general, covering monographs as well as articles and chapters from edited works. The dossier further contains an introduction on the Darfur crisis and links to selected web resources.

Besides the ‘normal’ 9/11 remembrance, their are also some holy feasts today. One of them is Milad un Nabi; the birth of the prophet Muhammed.
BBC – Religion & Ethics – Milad un Nabi

The other one is Paryushana, a time of reflection and repentance for the Jain devotee.

And not to forget the Ethiopian new year for the Rastafarians (and others of course).

Chatroom Revolutionaries Irans dissidents and exiles discover the Web.

“”Got a Mullah?” asks a stainless steel coffee mug for sale on the Web. Emblazoned alongside the question is a cartoon of a giant hand clenching two irritated-looking clerics who resemble Irans late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

One click away, a heather gray, 100-percent cotton T-shirt proclaiming “Free All Political Prisoners in Iran NOW!” features a famous image of Ahmad Batebi, an Iranian film student sentenced to 15 years for anti-mullah activities. The widely reproduced image shows Batebis “crime”: holding aloft a bloodstained shirt that belonged to a friend beaten by regime forces.”

The ink of the scholar is more sacred than the blood of a martyr

Sister Soljah
The ink of the scholar is more sacred than the blood of a martyr

Recently I have updated my blogroll (see the right part of this blog) with several very nice and interesting blogs from muslims. The one I am referring to here, is only one of them but I could not resist the slogan….which is originally a saying by the prophet Mohammed (I think it is). He probably did not refer to me as I am not a muslim, nevertheless I consider myself to be a scholar on islam. I would hope more people complied with this slogan, than with other slogans.
