Trial Yassin Nassari & Bouchra el Hor

Earlier on I posted several messages about the trial against Yassin Nassari and his Moroccan-Dutch wife Bouchra el Hor. The last one was about the Dutch newsprogram Netwerk in which I had small role trying to give some insight in particular Bouchra’s motivations and trying to deconstruct the all to easy portrayal of her as ‘terror-burqa’ in some of the Dutch press, but at the same trying to make clear how easy it is (not only in the UK, but perhaps even more in the Netherlands) for people to be charged with allegations of (supporting) terrorism.

During my holiday the verdict was out and Yassin was found guilty of the second and lesser of the two accounts with which he was charged. It carries a maximum sentance of 10 years. His wife was found not guilty of aiding and abbetting him and was set free. According to the judge and prosecutors Yassin, using the name, “Mock Turtle,” shared extremist videos with Tariq Al-Daour (Abu Dujanah), who provided information over the internet on suicide vests, car bombs, booby traps and poisons. He had also signed a book of support for Omar Rehman who studied at the same college and pleaded guilty earlier this year to plotting a bombing campaign using stretch limousines packed with propane gas canisters. One might question these acts of course and even object to them, it sounds, at least a little bit, as guilt by association.

There was more against him and his wife, probably more serious. Police discovered a mass of jihadi material on a laptop and removable hard drive including blueprints for an Al Qassam 1.5 rocket used by the Palestinian terror group Hamas.

The files showed detailed measurements and information about the missile components, how to make the propellant and explosive charge and the assembly of the completed rocket.

They recommended using the driveshafts from a Peugeot 504 “found in breakers’ yards” for the fuselage, if good quality stainless steel was not available.

Also hidden in the files were articles entitled ‘Virtues of martyrdom in the path of Allah,’ ‘Islamic Ruling on the Permissibility of Self-Sacrifical Operation – Suicide or Martyrdom?’ ‘Taking care of the family left behind by the fighter’ and ‘Providing for the families of the martyrs.’

Nassari had footage of executions and beheadings downloaded from the internet and a letter, in a mixture of Arabic and English, written by El-Hor, in which she encouraged her husband to become a martyr. El-Hor is the first Dutch woman standing trail in a terror case outside the Netherlands. She is not the first one with ties to the Netherlands though. Earlier on Omar Altimimi, an Iraqi with a Dutch passport who came to the UK in 2004, was sentenced to jail in a terrorism case.

According to the prosecution El Hor wrote, among other things:

“The moment has come where you and I have to separate for the cause of Allah,” she wrote. “I am so proud, my husband, and I am happy for you that Allah had granted you this chance to be a Mujihad [holy warrior] in the cause of God.

“I am writing you this letter to let you know you have my support and to remind you to be strong and not let Satan influence you, to remind you that Jihad [holy war] is now compulsory and you are obliged to protect the well-being of Islam and help your brothers and sisters and fight the Kuffar [non-believers].

“I really wish I could go with you because I too feel obliged to do all this and look to participate in any way I can.

“But everything happens by the will of Allah, may he be praised, only maybe, God willing I can follow you and if I could I will send your son to you so he can follow his father’s footsteps.

“I will pray to Allah he will release you from (this world) by granting you martyrdom and pray to Allah to reunite us in heaven, as your wife, together with your son in heaven.

“God willing I will do anything in my power to raise our son the best way I can so he can be a righteous Muslim. I will also tell him all about his father so he can be proud of him and follow in his footsteps.”

The information about the letter and the booklets on Nassari’s computer is obtained from an article in the Daily Telegraph. An interesting account of the trial can be found at the website of Abdur-Raheem Green: Islam’s Green. According to his story, he was one of the witnesses and he gives some interesting observations of the trial and also of the time he was waiting in the court. In another entry he refers to Yassin Nassari’s brother Marwan telling him that Yassin Nassari will be free in January. As I have understood Nassari receives a sentence of three and a half years of which he already spend more then one year.

A very incomplete overview of sites referring to the case (not mentioned above); some satirical, some in favour others against Nassari and El Hor, some criticizing the jury for acquitting El Hor, others questioning the fact that one of the main accusations (that held) were related to documents that are likely used by terrorists or to support terrorism. Although I do not agree with all the views expressed on those sites (and in some there are obvious mistakes), it gives a good impression of the usual debates over court cases and allegations like this. UTRECHT – De Utrechtse Vereniging Islaam-for-all werkt aan een opvanghuis voor Nederlandse meiden die zich tot de islam hebben bekeerd en daardoor thuis niet meer welkom zijn.

Het opvanghuis moet plaats bieden aan vier tot zes bekeerde moslima’s uit het hele land.

De vaak jonge bekeerlingen worden in veel gevallen gedwongen te kiezen tussen hun nieuwe geloof en hun familie, stelt initiatiefneemster Kathelijne Veenstra, die zich zelf ruim drie jaar geleden tot de islam bekeerde.

,,Vooral ouders die al een hele toekomst voor hun dochter hadden uitgestippeld, reageren heel heftig. ‘Als je nog één keer met die hoofddoek op thuiskomt, dan breek ik al je botten!’ wordt er dan geroepen.’’

Meiden die na hun bekering in problemen raken, worden op dit moment veelal opgevangen in het reguliere opvangcircuit. Maar dat is ‘niet ideaal’, stelt Veenstra. In het kamerproject voor bekeerde moslima’s kunnen de meiden met lotgenoten en in een stabiele omgeving werken aan herstel van het contact met familie en vrienden.

Deskundigen en de hulpverlening in Utrecht herkennen de problematiek, maar concrete cijfers zijn niet voorhanden. In de crisisopvang van het Utrechtse Meidenhuis zaten dit jaar twee meiden die in problemen raakten nadat ze zich tot de islam hadden bekeerd. ,,We komen het regelmatig tegen dat meiden op straat komen te staan nadat ze zich bekeerd hebben,’’ zegt afdelingsmanager Marieneke. ,,Er wordt vaak tegen meiden gezegd dat ze moeten kiezen tussen hun ouders en hun islamitische vriendje. Dat maakt het lastig. In gesprek blijven is heel belangrijk, want het blijft je kind. Wrikken levert niets op.’’

De dreiging vanuit ‘home-grown’ jihadistisch terrorisme is verminderd aanwezig. Daarnaast zet radicalisering onder een deel van de moslimjongeren door. De salafistische stroming in Nederland, die weliswaar niet oproept tot geweld maar wel een anti-integratieve en onverdraagzame boodschap predikt, is hierbij een belangrijke aanjager. Dit stelt de AIVD in zijn jaarverslag 2006.

Vandaag bood minister Ter Horst van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties het parlement het jaarverslag 2006 aan van de AIVD. In de daaropvolgende persconferentie lichtte Sybrand van Hulst, het hoofd van de Algemene Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst, de trends en ontwikkelingen toe die de AIVD vanuit zijn wettelijke taakstelling heeft waargenomen.

De concrete dreiging van ‘home-grown’ jihadistische netwerken lijkt afgenomen. Niettemin blijven aanslagen door terroristen in Nederland voorstelbaar. Waar internet eerder vooral fungeerde als turbo voor het uitdragen en verspreiden van het jihadistisch gedachtegoed, is het inmiddels uitgegroeid van promotiemiddel tot netwerkmiddel. Virtuele netwerken ontstaan net zo snel als open internetfora. Naast min of meer open en toegankelijke websites bestaan inmiddels ook professioneel afgeschermde jihadistische websites.

Het radicaliseringsproces onder migrantenjongeren zet door. Radicalisering hoeft niet altijd te leiden tot terrorisme, maar het kan wel een bedreiging op zich zijn, omdat het zorgt voor interetnische spanningen en polarisatie van de samenleving. Om te voorkomen dat radicalisering verder toeneemt, is zowel een repressieve als een preventieve aanpak noodzakelijk. Deze brede aanpak moet zorgen voor een tegengeluid, waardoor de wind uit de zeilen wordt genomen van radicale stromingen. Om met succes radicalisering het hoofd te bieden blijft ook diepgaand onderzoek van de AIVD naar de achtergronden en werking van radicaliseringsprocessen nodig.

Het hoofd van de AIVD benadrukte vandaag dat de dienst zich niet alleen richt op radicalisering en terrorisme, maar veel meer aandachtsgebieden heeft, zoals onder meer contra-inmenging, contraproliferatie, veiligheidsonderzoeken, en links en rechts activisme. De AIVD heeft de informatiepositie, bevoegdheden en expertise om informatie in te winnen, te verrijken en te delen. Daarmee is de dienst een belangrijke leverancier van kennis en informatie aan departementen, politie, en in toenemende mate ook aan het lokale bestuur.

In NRC en Volkskrant nog wat meer aanvullende informatie. De AIVD verklaart een deel van de populariteit van de extremistische islam overigens als een poging van jongeren om door provocerende en radicale uitlatingen een eigen identiteit te creëren.

Linkse extremisten gebruikten in 2006 steeds vaker geweld, vooral tegen (vermeend) rechtse extremisten, schrijft de AIVD. Dierenrechtenactivisteiten intimideren en bedreigen vaker personen (en familieleden) van mensen die werkzaam zijn in de proefdierindustrie. De groep Respect voor Dieren is volgens de AIVD verantwoordelijk voor de meeste incidenten, en is „fors gegroeid”. De Partij voor de Dieren wordt door deze groep „verguisd”.

De AIVD ziet in de rechts-extremistische hoek een groei van „niet politiek actieve neonazistische organisaties”. Een voorbeeld daarvan is Blood & Honour , een organisatie die zich met rechts-extremistische muziek en survivaltrainingen bezighoudt ter voorbereiding van de door hen verwachte rassenstrijd. Deze organisatie krijgt steeds meer structuur.

Een aantal kopstukken van het Hofstadnetwerk is opgepakt en vervolgd, enkele Hofstadleden zijn als ongewenst vreemdeling uitgezet, evenals een paar belangrijke figuren uit andere netwerken. Overigens is de verminderde terreurdreiging niet alleen toe te schrijven aan het overheidsoptreden. Intern zijn de groepen ook verdeeld geraakt over de jihadistische koers en de doelwitten. Verder ontbreken echte leidersfiguren.

Waakzaamheid blijft echter geboden, waarschuwde Van Hulst. Radicaliseringsprocessen voltrekken zich soms razendsnel, waardoor netwerken en cellen in korte tijd kunnen ontstaan. Onverwachte gebeurtenissen kunnen gewelddadige acties triggeren. Hij duidde op gebeurtenissen als de Deense cartooncrisis en de oorlog in Libanon. Ook uitspraken van Tweede Kamerlid Geert Wilders zouden tot acuut gebruik van geweld kunnen leiden.

Op het gesprek dat NCTb-directeur Tjibbe Joustra in dat verband met Wilders had, wilde Van Hulst niet nader ingaan. Hij herhaalde slechts dat de AIVD constateert dat ‘de toon van het debat en de taal die wordt gebruikt’ radicalisering in de hand werken.

Politiek en Rap: Salah Edin en Appa

Hadden we eerst DHC met onder meer hun Hirsi Ali Diss, nu hebben we mensen die ook echt goed kunnen rappen (sorry jongens…) die door middel van hiphopmuziek hun bijdrage leveren aan politieke debatten. De bekendste is nu Salah Edin met zijn ‘Land van..’ Dit levert commotie op; onder meer de SGP vindt dat de overheid geen muziek mag stimuleren (het nummer is gesubsidieerd) waarin begrip voor radicalisering wordt getoond.

Salah Edin is nu de bekendste voor het grote publiek, maar bij ingewijden is Appa misschien wel net zo populair. Appa (met dank aan peter) rapt al enige tijd over de Nederlandse politiek en bijvoorbeeld vorig jaar over de Israëlische inval in Libanon. Appa was voorheen lid van THC.

In een artikel uit ZemZem (Dit is geen poep wat ik praat) stelde ik al eerder, naar aanleiding van DHC’s Hirsi Ali Diss,:

Hiphop is een onderdeel geworden van de jeugdcultuur van autochtone en allochtone jongeren. In de ‘Hirsi Ali Diss’ komen elementen uit de hiphop (de grove straattaal, het dissen) en de jeugdcultuur van allochtone en autochtone jongeren (assertiviteit, eisen van respect) samen in een reactie op het integratiedebat. Een integratiedebat waardoor ze zich ‘gedisst’ voelen.

Dat is nog iets anders dan het met alles eens zijn natuurlijk, maar dat oordeel laat ik aan u over. Hieronder de Youtube clips van Salah Edin en Appa. (more…)

Voor veel jonge moslims is hun geloof een belangrijker onderdeel geworden voor hun identiteit. Dat komt door de sociale omgeving, zoals familie en vrienden, maar ook door de voortdurende discussie in de maatschappij over de islam. Deze al vaker geconstateerde ontwikkeling blijkt nu ook uit het onderzoek Van vasten tot feesten, dat Forum, het instituut voor multiculturele ontwikkeling, onder jonge moslims heeft laten verrichten.

Bend it like Azzy?

On Sabbah’s Blog an interesting article about Asmahan Mansour: a Muslim girl (r)ejected from football because of her hijab despite being allowed everywhere else she played (news that also reached the Netherlands). The decision is supported by the FIFA based on Law 4 which makes quite clear that

must not use equipment or wear anything that is dangerous to himself or another player (including any kind of jewellery).

It is therefore a little strange that the FIFA website does include several photo’s of girls with headscarves playing football:

If in any case a headscarf might indeed be dangerous, I have the perfect solution for Asmahan, the officials and the FIFA: the capsters: elegant, safe and sportslike. Oh and Dutch so for football that’s always good.

Sinds het instorten van de Twin Towers op 11 september 2001 is de naam Al-Qaeda niet meer weg te denken uit kranten, tijdschriften, radio- en tv-programma’s. Bij het oprollen van terroristische cellen, bij iedere aanslag en bij elke nieuwe dreiging, leggen de media direct een link met Al-Qaeda en indirect met Osama bin Laden. Het is de vraag of dit terecht is. Bin Laden is zijn macht grotendeels kwijt en van het oorspronkelijke Al-Qaeda is niets of weinig meer over.

In De Balie in Amsterdam bogen verschillende deskundigen zich onlangs over de vraag: ‘Waar is Al-Qaeda?’. Over wie hebben we het, waar komt het vandaan en waar wil het heen?

Duidelijk werd dat Al-Qaeda een minder eenduidig begrip is dan veel mensen (willen) denken. Midden-Oostendeskundige Bertus Hendriks en de arabisten Hans Jansen en Roel Meijer wezen erop dat Al-Qaeda niet zozeer een organisatie of netwerk is, alswel een ideologie, een state of mind, een inspiratiebron en een vlag waaronder wordt geopereerd.
